Back to the sails // the history of Son of a Sailor

It seems so crazy to me now, but Son of a Sailor is turning 5 this year! When we started the company, we had no idea that it would bring us to where we are now. In honor of this momentous occasion, we are doing a week full of blog posts looking back...

Old school Billy and I looking at things, circa 2011

When Billy and I started this company, we had no idea where it would take us! We have grown from making things on our living room floor, just the two of us, to a full-fledged studio and storefront with an amazing staff of six.

From the first time we met, Billy and I were creating things together. At the time, I was living in San Francisco and Billy was in Austin.

Billy opened an Etsy account with the name Son of a Sailor in order to buy me a present -- we had no idea what that name would come to mean to us.

Our button earrings were one of the first things we created together and put on Etsy in 2011.

We began designing with our Classics collection of jewelry, and have since added an additional collection, as well as a line of gifts and accessories for men and women. We knew we were on to something adding the Supply line to the mix -- having something for both men and women is an important aspect of our business and one that we have continued to nurture.

Our first Canopy studio, in 2014

Son of a Sailor has always been such a part of our relationship. We literally started the company on the floor of our living room. Since then, we've seen two studios and a couple of storage units. Of course, while we always think that we're finally moving to a space big enough for us, we pretty much always find ourselves spilling over back at home. It's safe to say that Son of a Sailor has taken over half of our house for just about 5 years as well...

The USS-SOS circa 2014

As we’ve grown, we’re happy to have added six full- and part-time employees that help us run the business. Looking back, we see the faces of all our current and former staff and can't help but get a little emotional at the hard work that everyone has put in.

We're saps and we know it, but five years is such an achievement! Plus, you've got to stop and smell the roses every once in a while, right? Join us for an entire week of flash backs, starting later today!
