CURATE // SXSW Film: What to Watch For

There are some films premiering this South by Southwest that make us verrry envious of our film badge-holder friends. Read up on these now, and look for them later this year.

Chef is a film that a good portion of Austin’s culinary scene can relate to - success achieved by way of food truck. Actor/Director Jon Favreau (of Swingers fame) has made a film about a chef who finds his good fortune in food trucks after his restaurant goes under. The film’s so new that there’s no trailer yet, but be on the lookout for its release in May. Cameos by the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., make it high wattage.

Beyond Clueless

Listed by Indiewire as one of the 15 most anticipated films, this documentary is about the “mind, body and soul” of the teen movie, from Clueless to Mean Girls. Charlie Lyne is a film critic turned filmmaker and the brains behind excellent UK pop culture site, Ultra Culture.

Veronica Mars

Even if you've never watched or heard of this early 2000s cult hit show, it’s impressive to learn that fans, by means of a Kickstarter, raised enough money to see this TV show turned into a film by Austin writer Rob Thomas. The film will premiere at SXSW, and there will be a collective sigh from VM fans who see Veronica reunite with Logan.
