SON OF A SAILOR // PARTNERS: Pop-Up Shop for Typhoon Haiyan Fundraiser

Typhoon Haiyan swept across the Philippines a few weeks ago, destroying many of the island communities and leaving over a few thousand people dead. It can be hard to know, in a disaster of that magnitude, how to help most effectively. Which organizations are providing the best aid? Should we donate money or nonperishable goods?

We were really excited when information was sent our way about the Artists Heal PH online pop-up shop of art and other goods. The women running the shop are a trio of sisters whose family is from the Philippines. When they heard about the devastation Haiyan caused, they knew they had to find a way to help. The idea of Artists Heal PH was born.

All proceeds from the shop, which will run starting tomorrow November 28th through December 31st, will be donated to the International Rescue Committee. Here’s info about what the IRC does:

IRC is a nonprofit organization aimed at restoring safety, dignity and hope to people affected by the world’s worst humanitarian crises.  Founded in 1933 at the suggestion of Albert Einstein, IRC is over 90% efficient, has been given an A+ by the American Institute of Philanthropy, four stars by Charity Navigator and has met all 20 accountability standards of The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.

The IRC quickly deployed emergency response teams to the hardest hit areas of the Philippines. Their aim is to prevent the spread of disease by focusing on clean water, sanitation and hygiene. They will reopen hospitals and health clinics, with the long-term goal of restoring the livelihoods of the people who were displaced by establishing cash for work programs to rebuild and revitalize communities.
