TRAVEL // WE WENT TO THERE: We <3 Silver Lake

This Son of a Sailor team member just got back from a much-needed escape to Southern California. After making a stop in San Diego, I took the Pacific Surfliner train that winds along the coast to Los Angeles. L.A., like any mega city, is not for the faint of heart, but it makes a big difference once you know the neighborhood you’re staying in.

The particular hood I became infatuated with is the ever cool Silver Lake. It’s a little enclave between Los Feliz, East Hollywood and Echo Park. I spent the most time on the stretch of Sunset Boulevard known as Sunset Junction. These stops are my new Silver Lake l-o-v-e’s along the way…

//Ragg Mopp Vintage//

This place has all the hallmarks of a good vintage store - a very well-curated selection crammed in together (yet with a good organizational system), romantic, vaguely campy decor and a sales person that knows exactly what pop culture references you’re hoping to pull from. After seeing me eye a few debaucherous eighties dresses, the lady behind the counter proceeded to pull out a Dynasty dream; a sparkly white number with killer fringe, a bright red bodycon dress and a black velvet sweetheart dress with sewed-on fake diamonds ensued. I chose the latter and feel like a very sexy Joan Collins in it.

//ReForm School//

First off, let’s take a second and appreciate how great the name ReForm School is. The site utilizes the fun theme just enough with header names like Student of the Month for featured artists and School News for updates and events. The boutique itself has a great mix of local craftspeople like Jill K (a personal favorite who does playful nudes using block prints) and design practice Scout Regalia.

//The Cheese Store of Silver Lake//

To be real, it doesn’t take much for me to love a cheese shop. I still wax poetic about a beautiful lavender, coffee-flavored cheese I was introduced to a while back. Tucked behind Intelligentsia in the burnt orange adobe building that is Sunset Junction’s crown jewel, the shop has a wide selection of gourmet cheeses, wines, oils…basically 75% of the things you need to feel like a very fancy person.

Thanks for the good time Silver Lake (and the Mischa Barton celebrity sighting).
